You've heard about book programs for elementary school students, but what about for high school students?

Maryville High School is taking donations for it's new book gifting program, called Spoofhound Bookshelf. It all started with an idea by student parent, Kelley Baldwin, over the summer.

"I have several friends who are elementary school teachers.  They shared about a program that selects book's authors where with a $10 donation toward a student, the teacher could then go purchase 10 $1 books and give that student one book each month throughout the school year.  And I thought that was a great idea."

Baldwin's son is a freshman at Maryville High School, so she thought it would be neat to do it for older readers. But she couldn't find an established program that benefited older students.

"It was frustrating at first.  Then I realized, hey, this might be kind of a good thing.  If we start from scratch, we can make this program anything we wanted it to be.  We aren't bound by any expectations and there's a certain freedom in that."

So she reached out to Maryville High School Librarian, Kim Offutt, in early October, and Spoofhound Bookshelf was born. Offutt says under the program, people make monetary donations and then she purchases the books.

"These are books that don't go into the high school library's collection.  They are set aside for students to actually take home and own."

They say the response has been wonderful and they are looking to launch the program next month, adding that any interested high school student can come in and get one book per month. They add that if you are interested in helping out with their program, you can send your donations to Maryville High School, care of Spoofhound Bookshelf.
